About Me

Anna Dahlby

Hi, I’m Anna.

I’ve always loved art, but in recent years, it has come to serve a greater purpose that goes beyond creation. As I lost control of my brain and body, art became my therapy.

In 2023, I was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis, a disorder where my immune system attacked my brain. I developed a movement disorder, tremors, a cognitive impairment, and my perception was impaired in 4/5 of my senses. A year prior, I was diagnosed with uveitis, which is inflammation in my eyes. My vision was altered, and I will never see fully clearly again. I am still working towards recovery every day.

As my brain, body, and vision were all simultaneously compromised, I had to find a new way to create. That is when I developed this pixelated style of painting. Although it is very meticulous work that requires delicate measurements and considerable patience, the squares provide me with a guide that resolves some of the skills that I lost after my brain injury.

I work mostly in grayscale but have started to experiment with color. I prefer painting portraits for the emotion that each face carries, though I enjoy painting cityscapes and landscapes as well. I don’t believe there are any rules in art, so I’m sure my style will continue to evolve as I navigate my unique situation and grow as an artist. But for now, painting in pixels is simply what feels right.

Thanks for taking the time to read my story and explore my work.
